As I’m getting older and the years go by, I’m realizing our world is all about “PRESTIGE”. Right when the new iPhone comes out, most of the society ditches their last one and upgrades to a new one.
The world is concerned about what type of car you drive, how much money you make yearly, what type of job you have, what kind of degree you have, do you have a bigger house than the neighbor next to you, do you buy your clothes at Banana Republic, and the list goes on. I’m not saying it’s not okay to have expensive taste and have valuable things, because I do believe that as children of God, He wants to give us His blessings, but at the same time, are these things defining who we are? As it says in Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before me,” meaning that if you’re putting other things first before our King, it’s an idol In your life.
At the end of the day, if we were to die right now, we couldn’t take any of it with us but our soul. So instead of worrying about competition with our peers about having better things than them, let’s focus on being examples of Christ’s love and leaving a legacy behind on this earth.
I do believe some people get their confidence in their “things” that they own, and to me that shows a lack of confidence – if you feel better about yourself because you have the newest phone, computer, iPad, etc., then you will never be completely satisfied because technology changes so much. New devices are coming out every few months, so if you think you have to go buy the newest thing because if you don’t you’re going to feel inferior to the people you surround yourself with, or inferior in who you are as a person, you need to look inward and remember what is truly important.
As it says in Psalm 18:2, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer, my God is my rock, in whom I refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” When we are struggling with pride, let’s look to Him!
